Pumpkintown Pickup
In the gospel of Mark, Jesus turned the world upside down saying, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). Our Lord modeled a life of sacrificial humility for the good of others. He came to serve. Therefore, in a smaller, yet significant way, we can go and do likewise! In fact, it is one of the ways that we can point people to the goodness of God. Jesus said, “…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16). We want to bring glory to God by humbly serving those around us.
One practical opportunity we have to do this is by helping pick up litter & emptying and replacing trashbags during this year’s Pumpkintown. Last year, nearly 20,000 people circulated the streets of downtown Athens during this event. So, it may come as no surprise that the event coordinator was delighted to hear about our desire to serve in this simple way.
The plan is to wear our TGC shirts and walk around with family/friends with “trash grabbers” in order to pick up litter and place in the nearby trashcans. If the opportunity presents itself to share about our church, we will make some church invitations available to hand out along the way. If you are available and interested in serving…
