It’s so good to have Taylor back. And we wasted no time in putting him to work!
This past Sunday, Taylor delivered the message and dove into Galatians 4:4-7. And what a gospel rich message & text! We were reminded that Christ transforms us from slaves to sons.
Often, we tend to think we need to do things in order to stay in God’s favor. And Taylor asked, “Why does God love us?”.
The answer comes from who God is, not from us.
Below are Taylor’s sermon notes, quotes, and scripture references. Or you can listen to the sermon by CLICKING HERE.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. -Galatians 4:4-7 ESV
MAIN POINT:
“The gospel transforms us from slaves to sin to sons of God.”
1.) Through the Son, our adoption is secured.
Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.. -Galatians 2:16
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.” -Galatians 3:13
“If He had not been man, He could not have redeemed men. If He had not been a righteous man, He could not have redeemed unrighteous men. And if He had not been God’s Son, He could not have redeemed men for God or made them the sons of God.” -John Stott
“To be right with God the judge is a great thing, but to be loved by God the Father is greater.” -J.I. Packer
God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:8
2.) Through the Spirit, our adoption is assured
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. -Ezekiel 36:26
...Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. -Mark 14:36
...the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons... -Hebrews 12:6-7a
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.-Galatians 2:20
“The knowledge that the Father has bestowed his love on us, so that we are called children of God - and in fact are his children, will, over time, prove to be the solvent in which our fears, mistrust, and
suspicion of God - as well as our sense of distance from him - will eventually dissolve.” -Sinclair Ferguson
