TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Samson Loses His Strength

Scripture: Judges 16

Bible Truth: The true source of our strength is God.

Where is Jesus: Hebrews 11:32

Samson was one of the heroes of the faith that the writer of Hebrews listed as an example for us. Hebrews 12:2 tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus when we think of men of faith from of old. In the end, Samson gave up his own life to save Israel by destroying their enemies. That is what Jesus did for us—he gave up his life to destroy our enemies.

Although Samson was one of several judges appointed to deliver Israel, Samson’s life demonstrates the frailty of earthly deliverers. Samson became foolishly distracted with the pleasures and desires of the world. Jesus was different. Jesus came as a deliverer but did not fall into sin (Hebrews 4:5).

Bible Story: God Gives Samson Strength

Scripture: Judges 13–14

Bible Truth: God cares for Israel in spite of their indifference and sin.

Where is Jesus: Hebrews 4:5

There is a noteworthy similarity between Jesus and Samson. Both of their mothers received word of their birth and the unique call upon their lives from an angel. Both husbands, Manoah and Joseph, were also visited by the angel to confirm what was said. And both Jesus and Samson were blessed of God as children. Samson however was an earthly deliverer whose sin greatly took away from his accomplishments.

Although Samson was one of several judges appointed to deliver Israel, Samson’s life demonstrates the frailty of earthly deliverers. Samson became foolishly distracted with the pleasures and desires of the world. Jesus was

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Gideon’s Victory

Scripture: Judges 6:36-7:25

Bible Truth: The hand of the Lord saves Israel.

Where is Jesus: Judges 8:27

The story of Gideon is a story of God saving his people. Gideon followed the Lord in faith during the battle, but it wasn’t long after the battle ended that Gideon fell into sin. He made a golden ephod (a vestlike outer garment). All of Israel came to see it and sinned in its presence. The house of God was in Shiloh and it was there that the priest wore a golden ephod. Gideon created his own alternate place of worship. One day a deliverer would come who would not sin—Jesus the Lord.

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: God Calls Gideon

Scripture: Judges 6:1–35

Bible Truth: God calls Gideon in order to display his power and save his people.

Where is Jesus: Judges 6:11–24

God was patient with Gideon and built his faith with many miraculous signs. The most important sign God gave Gideon was when the angel of the Lord visited him. In Judges 6:16 (NIV), the Lord answered Gideon’s concerns about being the weakest of his family, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.”

Like Gideon, our salvation completely depends on God. We, like Gideon, face an impossible enemy, sin. Only the blood of Jesus our Redeemer can bring victory for our own lives and help us win others for Christ. In a similar statement, Jesus said to his disciples in giving them the Great Commission, “Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). The Lord was with Gideon to win the battle, and he is with us as well.

Pray for Our Global Family: November 2022

We have the joy of partnering with like-minded churches around the world. The following is a brief overview of things to pray for as Sovereign Grace Churches are planted and established in many different countries. The following is the latest prayer update for the month of November:

“As a Sovereign Grace Pastor one of the highlights of any year, is the annual Sovereign Grace Pastors & Wives Conference. Gathering together in Orlando, November 1st-3rd, this time serves as a “family reunion” for so many, and after the pandemic prevented so many of our global pastors from attending these past two years, this year is particularly special!

Current registration for the conference is over 700, with folk travelling in from places such as Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Liberia, Zambia, Nimibia, Philippines & Australia, to name but a few.

For this month therefore, I’d love to enlist your prayers for this special and strategic time for our family of churches. Here are some ways you can pray for everyone involved:

  • Please pray that God would use the preaching to equip our pastors to live our lives, and pastor our churches, in a way that we make much of Christ as we faithfully serve His people.

  • Please pray for our main session speakers: Jeff Purswell, Jon Payne, C.J. Mahaney, Jared Mellinger, and Dave Taylor, as well as all of our breakout session speakers and worship leaders. That the Lord would bless and give grace to all that we do.

  • Please pray for the work of the Holy Spirit as we spend time together, both in our gatherings and outside of them.

  • Please pray that God would give us opportunities to care for one another and strengthen our relationships, both the old and new alike.

  • Please pray that God would use our time to strengthen and unite us in the gospel mission we share, all for the Audience of One.

What a wonderful time of year this is. May the Lord meet us and do what only He can do!”

This year, we have been privileged to send Walt and Kim Alexander, Taylor and Elisabeth Hollingsworth, Buddy and Judy Luster, Gil and Melanie Balch, Daniel and Anna McGraw, and Kirby Key to attend Pastors’ Conference. We ask that you would pray specifically for them as they attend, and that you would pray that God would use this time to create greater unity and clarity of vision for the gospel to be proclaimed and celebrated in Athens and beyond.

Thank you for praying with us. May His grace abound! To subscribe to the monthly Sovereign Grace Missions Newsletter, follow the link below.

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Israel & Ai

Scripture: Joshua 7-8

Bible Truth: Destruction comes upon those who do not follow the word of God.

Where is Jesus: 2 Corinthians 5:21

Take time to remind the children that God always punishes sin. Achan was killed for taking the gold and silver. He deserved to be punished for his sin. We all deserve to be punished for our sin as well. The penalty for even one sin is death. Jesus took the penalty for our sin at the cross so we can be forgiven. All those who trust in the Lord had their sin paid for on the cross.

After Achan was found out and Ai was destroyed, Joshua offered a sacrifice to God for a peace offering (Joshua 8:31). That offering pointed to the day when God would offer up his Son, Jesus, as the ultimate peace offering. Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Today, after the sacrifice of Jesus, there is no longer a need to offer peace offerings because we have peace with God (Romans 5:1).

In the coming days, we will celebrate by looking back over the last 4 years and enjoying rich fellowship together. TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Jericho Falls

Scripture: Joshua 3-6

Bible Truth: God conquers Jericho but spares one family by his grace.

Where is Jesus: Hebrews 11:30

Hebrews 11:30 records this commentary on the walls of Jericho, “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.”

With the story of Rahab’s faith, the author of Hebrews included the Israelites who blew their trumpets in a unified act of faith. Why were their faith and the resulting collapse of the great walled city included in Hebrews? It is designed to motivate us to look to Jesus! It is Jesus who perfected their faith; Hebrews tells us it is Jesus who will perfect our faith for he is the only author and perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:1–2)!

When the commander of the army of the Lord appeared to Joshua, the latter responded by falling on his face and worshiping him. In Revelation 19 this same commander of the army of God will return for the final battle. The commander is the Son of God—King of kings and Lord of lords. There is no mistake about who is going to conquer the Promised Land. Though Joshua and the Israelites are going to march around Jericho, it is the Lord who makes the walls collapse.

Bible Truth: Salvation moves beyond Israel as God’s plan unfolds.

Being in the line of David, Rahab was a forbearer of Christ. She was Boaz’s mother. Boaz was the father of Obed (with Ruth); Obed, the father of Jesse; Jesse, the father of David. Jesus was called the Son of David. The Matthew genealogy intentionally includes two Gentile women, Rahab and Ruth. This is a foreshadowing of God’s intention to reach the nations.

3 Reasons To Gather Around The Gospel This Saturday

This Saturday, our friend, Bob Kauflin, will be leading an evening of worship at the YMCA. Maybe you’re wondering if it will be worth going? Why add one more thing to the calendar? Won’t you just be going to church the next morning? Why should you give up a Saturday evening? Well, if any of these thoughts crossed your mind, I’d like to give 3 brief reasons why you should consider joining.

Sing to One Another

First, this context provides a unique and extended opportunity to obey the command given in Ephesians 5:18-20:

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ..

Notice that the stated goal of being filled with the Spirit in this text is to be able to address ONE ANOTHER in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. When we sing, we are not only expressing thankfulness to God, but we are simultaneously addressing one another. It is a public praise intended to bolster the hearts of other believers. It is an opportunity to look around at the many different faces and encourage one another with the rich truths expressed in the songs. So, when we gather to sing in this way, we are not merely reciting words off of a screen as independent worshipers. We are intended to lift up our voices as a musical testimony to one another about our God. It’s as if we are singing to one another - “This great truth belongs to you, too! This great God is your God, too!” So, we want to enjoy an extended opportunity to encourage one another in this way.

Fellowship with Gospel-Partners

Second, Bob Kauflin is coming from our sister church, Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville. To gather with Bob around the gospel gives expression to the rich partnership we enjoy as a family of churches. Their church, along with several others in our region, has been instrumental in helping establish Trinity Grace Church in Athens. From finances, to resources, to counsel - this church is representative of our gospel-partnership. We see this kind of relationship amongst believers in different churches throughout the New Testament. The churches in Corinth, Macedonia, and Achaia all contributed to help the church in Jerusalem (Rom. 15:25-26). The church in Philippi provided resources and encouragement to Paul as he indicates in his letter:

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. - Philippians 1:3-5

So, in a similar way, we have the wonderful privilege of receiving encouragement from and being an encouragement to Bob and Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville by gathering together around the gospel. It’s in moments like these that friendships are fostered and gospel-relationships are deepened.

Invite Friends and Neighbors

Third, this Saturday evening context provides a wonderful opportunity to invite friends and neighbors who may not be plugged into a local church. Since this is not a Sunday morning, it may prove to be less threatening to those who have not been to church in a long time (or ever). They may be willing to entertain an invitation to something on a Saturday evening. Even though it’s not a Sunday morning, it may present an opportunity to talk more about the Lord and possible next steps. Perhaps this gathering could open them up to coming on Sunday morning and connecting with more of the Lord’s people.

After reviewing these 3 reasons for gathering this Saturday, we hope that you will join us at the YMCA at 7pm. We’re looking forward to singing to one another, fellowshipping with gospel partners, and introducing friends to a community that is seeking to live for Christ in Athens!

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: God Heals Israel with a Bronze Snake

Scripture: Numbers 21:4–9

Bible Truth: God saves his people individually.

Where is Jesus: John 3:14–15

The Old Testament is filled with stories that point to Jesus. Here we see sinners healed of the snakebites sent to them as judgment when they look to the upraised snake. It was God who told Moses to put the bronze snake up on a pole.

The snake on the pole pointed forward to Jesus who would one day be lifted up. Because of this, God healed the people and did not count their sins against them. Isn’t it interesting that this Old Testament story precedes the most quoted verse of the entire New Testament? When we read of the bronze snake being lifted up we should think of Christ.
