Pray for Our Global Family: October 2022

We have the joy of partnering with like-minded churches around the world. The following is a brief overview of things to pray for in September as Sovereign Grace Churches are planted and established in many different countries. The following is the latest prayer update for the month of October:

In his book, “Truth On Fire - Gazing at God Until Your Heart Sings”, Adam Ramsey writes the following: “Relying on our own cleverness to live out the Christian life is like trying to circle the globe in a glider. It might fly for a while, but predictably, it is going to crash. Prayer, on the other hand, is God’s sovereignly appointed means of connecting our never-ending neediness to God’s never-ending power. Prayer is the vehicle through which God will accomplish his invincible purposes, through the lives of weak dependent people, like you and me.”

I love that quote, and it’s so true. Without His sovereign help, we’re like a glider trying to circle the globe, all by itself, and so here’s how you can be praying in the month ahead, we so need Him…

  1. Please pray for Todd Peterson and Erik Rangel who are nearing the end of a recent trip to India. Please pray for wisdom as they continue conversations with various church leaders (Arun in Prayahraj, Caleb and Sidhanta in Bhubaneswar and Hemo in Karaput) in determining a way forward for future SGC partnerships. Todd and Erik have been leading the Villatoro ministry in Vempadu, headed by JP, with the hopes of converting it into a formal foundation. They have also been overseeing plans for a Bible College in Gundugolanu, and so please pray for wisdom and clarity for these men as they continue to serve in this way.

  2. Please pray for Bert Turner (Executive Pastor of Covenant of Grace Church, Copley, Ohio) as he continues his time in Brazil (September 1st – October 12th). Please pray for safety and good health for all those who are travelling. Please pray for good communication as Bert meets with Pastors Emerson, Fabiano, Guilherme and Jader as they seek to build gospel-centred relationships through which Jesus can build his church. Please pray for Rich Richardson as he joins Bert in Brazil, so that as they communicate and preach they will “bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 3:9-11).

  3. Please pray for Dave York and his team of SGC pastors (Dave Taylor, Riley Spring, Tony Walsh and Lynn Baird) who will travel to the Philippines from October 7th-16th to conduct oral exams for ordination. There are 19 men who are candidates, and so please pray for peace and wisdom for them as they sit these exams. Please pray for safety for everyone travelling from Australia, the USA and the Philippines, and that God would give understanding and discernment to the SGC pastors on the ordination panels.

  4. Please pray for Nick Kidwell and his team who planted Valley Creek Church in Malvern, Pennsylvania on Sunday October 2nd. The church building is located in the heart of Malvern amongst many local homes and businesses. Please pray that it will be a place that brings about gospel change for many folk in the community there. Please also pray for unity for the team, asking God to give them a united vision for the mission they are on together.

Thank you for praying with us. May His grace abound! To subscribe to the monthly Sovereign Grace Missions Newsletter, follow the link below.

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Moses Disobeys God

Scripture: Numbers 20:2-13

Bible Truth: Our anger against others is also a sin against God.

Where is Jesus: Hebrews 4:15

Instead of speaking to the rock to draw forth the water, Moses strikes the rock in his anger. Here we see the fallibility of Israel’s redeemer. Up until this point Moses did what God told him to do. But Moses was a fallen mediator, unable to stand sinless in the gap for the people. Jesus is the perfect mediator.

Unlike Moses, the imperfect mediator, Jesus, though he was tempted like us, did not sin. He intercedes for us yet today. His blood covers all our sins and he continually stands before God the Father testifying to our redemption.

Battling With Better Facts

Psalm 112:6-8 - For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

Last Sunday, Walt preached on Psalm 112. In verses 6-8, he pointed out that the heart that is godly is firm and steady - not because they always get good news - but because they know where to go and what to do with bad news. Notice that the godly still receives bad news. Bad things still happen. Hard news still comes their way. But the difference is that the godly are not afraid. There is stability in spite of the circumstances. So, how is this possible? And how do we get a resilient heart like this?

The answer is in the “better facts.” Sure, bad news will come. Those facts will hit us over and over again - the child that strays from the faith, the job loss, the bad medical report…etc. But when the bad news comes, the godly trust in the LORD. He has proven himself over and over again. He is trustworthy. The way to fight our fears is to remember the “better facts” of what it means to belong to this God. The one who did not spare his own son is not going to nickel and dime us in the moment of crisis. We can be comforted that the one who loved us to death has all things in his hands and he promised he would never leave us or forsake us.

So, when the bad news comes, remember these “better facts” so that you can go to battle against fear and steady your heart in the LORD:

Isa 41:10 ESV - fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isa 26:3 ESV - You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Deu 31:8 ESV - It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."

Jhn 16:33 ESV - I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

Psa 32:8 ESV - I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Psa 37:23-24 ESV - The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.

Mat 11:28-29 ESV - Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

2Co 12:9-10 ESV - But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Isa 40:31 ESV - but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Phl 4:6-7 ESV - do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Jas 1:2-3 ESV - Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

Isa 41:13 ESV - For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, "Fear not, I am the one who helps you."

Jos 1:9 ESV - Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

Phl 4:19 ESV - And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Psa 23:4 ESV - Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psa 27:1 ESV - Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psa 9:9-10 ESV - The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Psa 103:2-5 ESV - Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Rom 8:28, 35, 37-39 ESV - And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. ... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? ... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Israel Spies Out the Land

Scripture: Numbers 13-14

Bible Truth: Faith is required to follow God’s plan.

Where is Jesus: Numbers 14:11–24

Once again Moses stood in the middle for his people and prayed to God saying, “Please forgive the sins of your people, according to your great steadfast love.” God granted Moses’ prayer because Moses prayed for the one thing that could save Israel: God’s steadfast love and forgiveness.

Although God didn’t allow Israel into the Promised Land, he forgave Israel because he knew that one day his Son, Jesus, would stand in the middle as their true mediator and die on the cross for their sins. Centuries later, in a letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul called Jesus the one true mediator (1 Timothy 2:5) who stood in the middle between sinful man and a holy God. Even as Moses prayed, God saw ahead to the day when he would send his Son.

Kirby Key Testimony: The Story of God’s Sovereign Grace in My Life

The following is a testimony presented by Kirby Key on Sunday, September 18, 2022…

My Life in Christ

I’m incredibly honored to share the story of God’s graciousness to me. I have been blessed to know the faithful kindness of Jesus throughout my life. I cannot remember a time that I did not know Jesus. My parents faithfully raised me in church and persistently prayed for my salvation since I was born. I was always inquisitive about God as a child and was concerned with spiritual things from a very young age. When I was five-years-old, one night before bedtime I was asking my mom questions about everything from Noah’s ark to eternity in heaven when she decided to share the gospel of Jesus with me. I confessed my need for Jesus as my Savior and I prayed to receive him as my Lord. After talking to the pastor of our church at the time, I was baptized as a believer in Christ.

While I don’t remember anything specific about my conversion or baptism, I do believe that God honored the prayer of my parents and my five-year-old self by giving me new life in Christ and filling me with the Holy Spirit. He has been gracious to grow me in Christlikeness and increase my faith throughout my life. I can recall special seasons of spiritual growth during my childhood where God convicted me of personal sin and compelled me to trust Him more. One of the most significant seasons of spiritual growth in my life was ignited when my parents decided to enroll my sister and I at Christ’s Legacy Academy. Over my five years as a student at CLA, I was blessed by the influence of several godly teachers who exemplified the character of Christ to me and encouraged me to pursue godliness. I was inspired by my Bible classes to devote myself to reading Scripture, and my heart was drawn to God through reading His Word.

Another significant season of personal growth was the summer following my freshman year at Bryan College. I was given the opportunity to serve as a ministry intern at First Baptist Church in Athens, where I was faithfully mentored by the Student Pastor. He taught me about church ministry and advanced my growth in godliness by counseling me through regular conversation, challenging me to serve students and families in the church, and requiring me to read several incredible books, such as The Mortification of Sin by John Owen.

My Journey to Trinity Grace Church

I continued serving as the ministry intern over the next two years while I finished my undergraduate degree. God blessed me with many sweet friendships during my time at FBC that enhanced my love for the local church. As I finished my degree at Bryan College, I was promoted from intern to director of the Student Ministry at First Baptist. This was a very exciting and challenging time for me, and I

learned a lot about leadership and teaching and caring for people. I have many precious memories of significant moments with students and faithful encouragement from my church family that I will cherish all my life. However, after receiving the counsel of many wise and godly people in my life I decided to leave my ministry position and accept a teaching job at CLA.

Deciding to transition from First Baptist to CLA also meant that I needed to find a new church to call my home. Trinity Grace was the first church I visited, and I was immediatley compelled by the clear gospel teaching, sincere worship, and joyful fellowship. I knew that Trinity Grace was the place where God wanted me to join, but I was hesitant to commit. I was worried that I would feel isolated and would struggle to find community and friendship. Now I’m so glad I pushed through those worries and decided to join the church. I have been blessed by several wonderful friendships within the church that have challenged me to grow and encouraged me in Christ. I’m very thankful for the pastoral care of Walt and Buddy and Taylor, and for the hospitality of godly families like the Smiths and the Finches. My heart has been refreshed and my soul enriched over the last year of participating in the gospel community of this church. The preaching of the Bible and the love of the people have consistently reminded me of the goodness of Jesus, and now I can’t imagine belonging to any other church. God has been so gracious and faithful to save me and grow me and preserve me throughout my life, and I’m very grateful that His fatherly hand has guided me to Trinity Grace.

SERMON RECAP

Great are the Works of the Lord

September 18, 2022 || Psalm 111

MAIN POINT: Praise the Lord with all your heart for all his wonderful works and words.

  • Praise the Lord (v. 1)

  • Remember his works and words (v. 2-9)

  • Fear the Lord (v. 10)

We are a congregation of people redeemed by the living God - hallelujah. We, like Israel, were slaves. We were slaves to sin and had no hope of escape. But God made a way when there was no way. He provided the perfect Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, to be slain for sinners. He died so that we might live - Hallelujah! We, like Israel, were wandering in the wilderness. We were spiritually famished and dead in our sin. But God made a way when there was no way. He provided bread from heaven in Jesus Christ who said “I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me shall not hunger” - Hallelujah! We, like Israel, were not a people worthy of God’s special love and were instead deserving of his righteous judgment. But God made a way when there was no way. God demonstrated his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us - Hallelujah! We, like Israel, had no place to call home - we were orphaned by our sin. But God made a way when there was no way. Jesus Christ died so that we might be brought into the family of God to dwell in his presence forever - Hallelujah! Behold the living God is our God! He is The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness to us! - Hallelujah! All of his wonderful works and words were leading to our salvation in Christ so that we might live today to the praise of his glory! - Hallelujah!

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Miriam

Scripture: Numbers 12

Bible Truth: Moses mediated on behalf of Miriam.

Where is Jesus: Philippians 2:1–11

Consider the pride of Aaron and Miriam and the humility of Moses who God said was the most humble (meek) man “on the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3). Moses, whose life and ministry is a picture of Jesus, is also a picture of Jesus in his humility. No one ever humbled himself more than Jesus, the Son of God, who came to earth and died on the cross for our sins.

Consider the humble response of Moses when Aaron and Miriam came before God in the tent of meeting and complained against him. Moses did not object to what they said about him, and when Miriam was struck with leprosy, Moses interceded with God for her. In the same way, Jesus prayed for those who mocked and crucified him. Jesus said, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

Working Together - Growing in Love

Ephesians 4:16 says “… the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”

We are a church rich with members who are eager to serve. There are so many things going on, especially “behind the scenes” that provide opportunities to use our gifts to serve one another. Every one of these moments of service contribute to the health and growth of Trinity Grace. Every minute of sleep sacrificed to come and set up chairs. Every meal prepared to invite the lonely into your home. Every minute taken to call a struggling friend. Every dime given to help secure a home for this church. Every open-handed moment given for the sake of the gospel builds the church up in love.

The video below captures just a fraction of what goes into allowing our Sunday morning service to be possible. And we just want to take a moment to say that we are grateful to God for each member of Trinity Grace Church! Thank you for serving the Lord and one another in so many ways on Sunday and beyond.

There are many ways to serve. On Sunday, Walt mentioned at least a couple areas of continued need. We could use additional help in TGKids and with setup. If you are looking for ways to get plugged in and serve, please contact Tim Smith (tpsmith@athensk8.net). He would be happy to talk with you and help get you involved.

The End Of The Matter

September 11, 2022 || Ecclesiastes 12:9-14

MAIN POINT: The way to be wise in this crooked world is still by fearing God.

1. Fear God.

2. Keep the commandments of God.

3. Wait for the judgment of God.

Other friends will forget all kindnesses done, no matter how many. But God will forget all your sins, and remember them no more; yet not one good deed of love, no, not one good thought from first to last, shall be forgotten. Thomas Goodwin

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: The People of Israel Complain

Scripture: Numbers 11

Bible Truth: God’s mercy spares Israel again, despite their rejection of God.

Where is Jesus: Colossians 1:10–14

Paul encourages us in these verses to have endurance, patience, and joy as we serve God. He wants us to give thanks to God, who has given us redemption and forgiveness through Jesus.

Just like the Israelites, we are tempted to grumble and complain against God when we do not like his plan for us. Just like the Israelites, we deserve death, but instead we can receive rescue through Jesus.

Whenever the Israelites sinned and God had mercy on them, he gave them mercy because he knew that a Savior was coming. Anytime God has ever had mercy on anyone, it was because of Jesus.

Pray for Our Global Family: September 2022

We have the joy of partnering with like-minded churches around the world. The following is a brief overview of things to pray for in September as Sovereign Grace Churches are planted and established in many different countries. The following was written by Mark Prater, Executive Director of Sovereign Grace Churches:

In his book, “Brothers, We are Not Professionals” John Piper writes this compelling sentence: “Prayer is the splicing of our limp wire to the lightning bolt of heaven.” Our efforts to pastor our churches, and to advance the gospel together as a family of churches, can feel like that “limp wire” at times. We need God’s power and help. It is by praying for one another that we can splice our feeble efforts "to the lightning bolt of heaven” and God answers our prayers by giving us power to accomplish what He has called us to do for His glory.

It is with a sense of desperate dependence that I’m sending you the prayer requests. May God, according to the riches of his glory, grant us power through his Spirit to advance the gospel together for the glory of Christ. Here’s how you can be praying…

  1. Pray that God would give the members and pastors of Sovereign Grace churches opportunities to share the gospel with unbelievers in our communities and workplaces.

  2. Pray for Nick Kidwell and his core team that will plant Valley Creek Church in Malvern, PA this September asking God to strengthen their church planting efforts, and to draw unbelievers and the unchurched to Valley Creek.

  3. Pray for the churches in Dnipro, and Sinelnikovo, Ukraine that Sovereign Grace is relating to, and sending money for relief efforts, asking God to protect them, and to use them to offer gospel hope as the war continues in that nation.

  4. Pray for our new 2022-2023 Pastors College students and their families who will be moving to Louisville, KY before classes start at the end of August, asking God to provide for them and to give them grace to grow over the next year while at the PC.

  5. Pray for the Eckstein Conference hosted by the Arche Church in Hamburg, Germany, September 30-October 2 where pastors from Germany and around Europe will gather for teaching and fellowship. Also pray for the first Europe Sovereign Grace Pastors Fellowship Gathering on Tuesday, October 4 led by Jeff Purswell and Mark Prater.

  6. Pray for our first West Africa Pastors and Planters Academy in Monrovia Liberia where 10 men from for different West African nations are being trained to pastor and plant churches in West Africa. Pray for Dyonah Thomas, Sr. Pastor of Grace Life Church in Monrovia, and the Dean of the Academy, asking God to give him grace to lead and invest into these 10 men.

  7. Pray for Ed O’Mara and his family who moved to Italy in July to plant a Sovereign Grace church in that country a year from now. Pray that God would use the next year to help them continue to learn the Italian language, and the culture for the purpose of being equipped to advance the gospel through church planting.

  8. Pray that God would continue to provide financially for Sovereign Grace Churches so that we can fund the gospel opportunities He is giving us throughout the world

Thank you for praying with us. May His grace abound! To subscribe to the monthly Sovereign Grace Missions Newsletter, follow the link below.

September 4, 2022 || Ecclesiastes 11:1-12:8

MAIN POINT: Don’t spend your life trying not to die, spend your life living for Christ with all your might.

  1. Spend life. (11:1-6)

  2. Enjoy life. (11:7-10).

  3. Commit all of life to God. (12:1-8)

“Chapters [in life] are divided by various things—age, strength, singleness, marriage, employment, children at home, children in college, grandchildren, retirement, etc. No chapter has all the joys. Finite life is a series of trade-offs. Finding God’s will, and living for the glory of Christ to the full in every chapter is what makes it a success, not whether it reads like somebody else’s chapter or whether it has in it what only another chapter will bring.”

John Piper

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKids

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: God Has Mercy on Israel

Scripture: Exodus 33—34

Bible Truth: God for gives Israel’s sin.

Where is Jesus: Hebrews 12:18–25

This passage begins by talking about the mountain that Moses went up on to receive the Ten Commandments. It reminds us how the people had to stay far away from God. Moses was a good mediator for the Israelites, but the perfect mediator is Jesus. Now we do not need to be afraid to come to God. Our mediator, Jesus, has made peace with God for us.

The only reason God accepted Moses as a mediator was because God knew that one day the promised Savior would come and be a perfect mediator.

Me & My Friend, Elisabeth!

This past Sunday night, we had our annual Trinity Grace Family Night!

Along with the many exciting announcements, updates, and financial presentations, we were also blessed by the testimony of one of the dear ladies of our church. Below is the transcript of the testimony that Cynthia Pritchett shared with us about how God used the writings of Elisabeth Elliot to bolster her faith. May it build your faith and encourage you to seek out friends like Elisabeth!

Good evening friends! I’m extremely excited to celebrate Family Night with you. One blessing that I have personally received through being a member of this church is the blessing of having friends become family. When the Lord saved me in Cleveland TN almost 18 years ago, I never imagined that I would get to be part of a church plant in my hometown.

This evening, I pray that your faith will be strengthened as you hear about how the Lord has been sustaining our family through a particularly difficult, yet good, season.

On  Feb 2, 2021, Chris and I were  approved to open our home as foster parents. That morning I enjoyed drinking coffee with friends, oblivious to the fact that by that evening someone else’s  six week old baby girl would be laid in my arms, and entrusted to my motherly care. The caseworker even indicated that this would likely be a very long placement.

This  precious girl had been with us for two days when extreme fear set in. I was attaching to her. I started thinking thoughts such as, ”How will this child, myself, my husband, and my children handle the grief if we ALL form attachments, and then she leaves our home as a toddler?” My faith began to get weak, and my desire to worship the Lord began to dwindle.

But God, in His loving kindness, did not leave me in this state of mind. One evening as I was scrolling Facebook, I read this quote by Elisabeth Elliot.

“We are human, we are ‘selves’, and it takes no effort at all to feel. But worship is not a feeling. Worship is not an experience. Worship is an act, and this takes discipline. We are to worship ‘in spirit and truth’ never mind the feelings. We are to worship in spite of them.”

For years I had desired to study the life of Elisabeth Elliot, and after reading  more of her quotes, I ordered  the book, “Let Me Be A Woman.” I am grateful that I did!

One night I was reading the book and was deep in thought about  baby girl’s future. I’m sure most of you already know, but her name is Harmony. I found solace in these words.

“You and I can be steadied, directed, and held, by the knowledge of where we came from and where we are going. To know that the whole world moves in “Harmony” at God’s bidding, is wonderfully stabilizing.”

I continued to read Elisabeth’s writings, and started listening to her recorded speeches. When I started doubting my ability to handle my lot in life, I remembered that Elisabeth Elliot said,

Don’t dig up in doubt, what you planted in faith.”

I have a vivid memory of driving to the DCS office to pick baby girl up from a parental visit. That particular day was rough. I told God that I wish I had Elisabeth to call right then. I knew she would have had the perfect words to say to refocus my mind from fear to faith. My radio was set to Moody  which has been a favorite of mine for eighteen years, yet until that day, I had never heard them share any of Elisabeth Elliot’s recordings. My faith grew immensely as I heard Elisabeth’s comforting and familiar voice speak  words of truth directly to my soul. The title of the message was, not surprisingly, “A Holy Harmony.”

I also vividly remember a day following a court review in March. The judge made a surprising decision in Harmony’s case. I wrote this Elisabeth Elliot quote on a chalkboard in our living room, and by following her advice, I survived the next few weeks.

“Sometimes, life is so hard you can only do the next thing. Whatever the next thing is, just do it. God will meet you there.”

I felt like my life was spinning out of control. We were experiencing multiple trials during  this time (many of them not  pertaining to our foster journey). We had just exited four of the busiest months of our lives which kept us from having time to truly focus on each individual trial that was coming our way. I experienced two and a half weeks of intense insomnia brought on by the stress. It was during this time that I ordered a devotional written by Elisabeth Elliot titled “Keep a Quiet Heart”. It was in this devotional that I read a prayer of hers and immediately began to pray it for myself.

“Lord, give to me a quiet heart

That does not seek to understand

But confident steps forward in

The darkness guided by your hand.”

Although our family is still in the midst of a variety of trials, we are thankful for the solid, faithful, and biblical leadership of our church, thankful for God’s word that never changes, thankful for the positive relationships that we have built with our foster daughter’s biological family, thankful for the rich relationships that we share with so many in our church community, and we are thankful for friends like Elisabeth Elliot. Our faith is being sustained.

SERMON RECAP

Dead Flies, Snake Bites, & Much Chatter

August 28, 2022 || Ecclesiastes 9:13-10:20

MAIN POINT: Watch out, it is so easy for a little folly to wreck wisdom’s blessing.

  1. A little sin can destroy much good (9:13-18).

  2. A little folly can outweigh much honor (10:1-4).

  3. A little error can create much trouble (10:5-7).

  4. A little misstep can ruin much work (10:8-11).

  5. A little word can reveal much madness (10:12-15).

  6. A little king can cause much destruction (10:16-20).

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,

we will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us.

The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him;

his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure;

one little word shall fell him.

Bible Story: The Golden Calf

Scripture: Exodus 32

Bible Truth: Where sin is great, God’s grace is greater.

Where is Jesus: Hebrews 8:5–13

Though there are many significant differences between Moses (he was a sinner) and Jesus (he was sinless), there are similarities as well. Moses and Jesus were both mediators between God and man. Just as Moses pleaded with God not to destroy the Israelites when they worshiped the golden calf, Jesus asked his father to have mercy on those who crucified him (Luke 23:34).

How Do We Grow To Enjoy God’s Gifts?

The choice is yours: stay better or start enjoying God’s good gifts. On Sunday, Walt showed us from Ecclesiastes 9 the temptation of becoming bitter and cynical towards life’s unpredictable nature. What is portrayed in Proverbs as a neatly mapped city with perfect symmetry is portrayed in Ecclesiastes as a city that has been twisted by an earthquake. Because of the devastating effects of the curse, the default design of how life should work is filled with painful and surprising detours at every turn. The net result of encountering so many unexpected turns can leave us jaded, bitter, or anxious.

However, the Preacher insists on a different direction! Rather than succumbing to a bitter cynicism, Solomon calls us to something very surprising - JOY! In fact, Ecclesiastes 9:7-10 contain indicatives - commands. These are not merely observations and musings. Instead, these few verses carry what has been called “the moral urgency of Joy.” Enjoyment is the way we obey these commands. Let’s review the verses:

7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Let your garments be always white. Let not oil be lacking on your head. 9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going. - Ecclesiastes 9:7-10

In summary, we are commanded to enjoy our wine, our wife, and our work. These are a sampling of the wonderful things God has given us to enjoy. Rather than obsessing over gain, we are to simply enjoy the gifts that our Creator delights to give. We can slow down and drink in God’s good gifts to wash down life’s brokenness. We should be a people who refuse to walk down the path of bitterness and, instead, cultivate a recognition of God’s gifts. When we sit down to the family meal, we can marvel at the hand-shucked corn and the mastery with which the mashed potatoes were smashed to tasty perfection.

But how do we cultivate this joy in God’s good gifts?

Author and theologian Tom Schreiner has written helpfully about how we can grow in our joy:

The key to joy is humility. God calls us to be content as creatures. Pride makes us want to be gods, but humility accepts the truth that we can’t master time. We are flesh and blood creatures; we are made of dust. So we accept our work every day from God. To be a creature means we cannot unravel all the mysteries of the universe, but we can live and work and rest in God.

We give thanks to God for what he has called us to do. We thank him for the jobs we have. We don’t master life, and we don’t know what the days ahead will bring. But we put our trust in God, and eat and drink every day with joy. We give thanks for our daily bread. We find joy in the ordinary things of life: in taking walks, in exercising, in regularly attending church, and in meeting with friends. If our days are good, if we are spared suffering, that is a gift of God. Ordinary days have their own glory. Every piece of toast with jam on it is a gift of God. Every sweet apple and tasty clementine. When we receive life as God’s gift, we see the glory in the ordinary.

As G.K. Chesterton wrote, “The most extraordinary thing in the world is an ordinary man and his ordinary wife and their ordinary children.”

There is a glory and joy in the ordinary things.

Ecclesiastes says, “Don’t try to unravel and figure out the reason everything happens in the world.” It is beyond your ability; “the secret things belong to the Lord our God” (Deuteronomy 29:29). When days are good, enjoy them. Enjoy the days God has given you with your wife, your family, and your friends.

Receive them as a gift of God and see God’s goodness in such days.

May we be a people who fear God and grow in our enjoyment of his daily gifts!
