Who Told You?: Lauren Trew

1Co 3:5-7 - “What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”

This passage captures the truth of how God uses his people to carry out his purposes of bringing new life - and he often does so incrementally.

This past Sunday, we invited Lauren Trew to share about those who planted and watered the gospel in her life and how God used their influence to bring the gospel’s effects to fruition in her soul.

Who has God placed in your life? We don’t know if we’ll be planting or watering, but let’s ask the Lord to help us engage in the process!

The following is Lauren’s testimony from Sunday:

My name is Lauren Trew. I’ve been a Christian for 23 years now and I’m excited to tell you the story about three special people who told me about Jesus!

Thinking through three distinct “seasons” of my life, brought these individuals quickly to mind. When I was a child, I was fortunate to spend quite a bit of time with my great-great aunt Bessie. She was in her 70’s, a widow, and always made me feel special. She sang hymns to and with me, taught me the 23rd Psalm (which we recited while making the bed together) and she talked freely about Jesus. The way she told me about Jesus made Him sound like He was her best friend. Looking back, Aunt Bessie definitely planted the seed of faith, showing me that Jesus is Emmanuel - God With Us.

Jumping ahead to the season of life with two young daughters. By now, we were a church going family. I liked church. I actually liked Jesus at church - a lot. But only on Sundays. I didn’t see a need for Jesus in my life on any other days. My best friend Tiena went to church and also to a Bible Study - on a whole different day! She was crazy about that Bible Study. I just thought she was crazy. But Tiena always impressed me with the way she spoke about her husband. He had the same job as my husband, but Tiena didn’t seem to get nearly as easily angry, rustrated, or irritated as I did. Her language was kinder, gentler. She was more patient. She gave Jesus credit for all of that. I liked Jesus. But only on Sundays. When Tiena found out their family was moving…to Africa!…she insisted I visit her Bible Study with her to check it out. She made sure I joined and is a dear friend to this day! She’s still telling me about Jesus every time we talk!

This Bible Study was where special person number three entered my life. I will forever be grateful to the teaching leader of that class, Bonnie, for opening up the Word of God and telling me the truth about Jesus! I know now that there were others along the way who had told me the Truth, I just either wasn’t listening or my heart wasn’t ready to fully receive it. It was during this season of my life, that God’s Word and the truth that perfect Jesus Christ died on the cross for MY sins - not just “the sins of the world” - finally sunk in! Bonnie’s teaching from the Bible showed me that I am a sinner in need of God’s saving grace.

There wasn’t much fanfare to it, but I remember asking God’s forgiveness for my sin and telling Him that I believed Jesus was who He said He was - God’s Son - given to me so that believing in HIM, I would not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus saved me and changed me from being a rule-following church-goer to a daughter of the King! Week after week, I couldn’t get enough of wanting to read God’s Word, wanting to hear Bonnie tell me more about Jesus, wanting my relationship with my Savior to grow more and more. That was a sweet season of Bonnie telling me about Jesus!

These three women greatly impacted my relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. I thank God for my great-great aunt, Bess Moses…my best good friend, Tiena Wisniewsky, and my Bible Study Fellowship Teaching Leader and friend, Bonnie Zadoretsky. To God be the Glory!

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKIDS

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Solomon & the Temple of God

Scripture: 1 Chronicles 28—29

Bible Truth: Now that peace has come to Israel, Solomon builds a house for God.

Where is Jesus: 1 Corinthians 3:16–17

Solomon was commissioned by God to build the temple. The temple would be the place where God’s presence would dwell. All of worship would revolve around the temple. This temple was only a shadow of another temple, our hearts. Paul draws the connection in 1 Corinthians 3:16–17: “Do you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”

The temple of Solomon would be filled with the presence of God. Now as believers we are also filled with the Spirit of Christ.

Solomon was chosen by God to build the temple because he was a man of peace (1 Chronicles 22:9–10). David was not permitted to build God’s house because he was a man of war. One day the king would come who would reign on the throne of Solomon forever. This king, Jesus, would build God a house—the church. Of the increase of his peace there would be no end (Isaiah 9:7). God chose Solomon, a man of peace, to point forward to the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).

Walt’s Prayer Requests for the Ethiopia Trip

One of the things we often say around here is that we believe churches are stronger together. We are thankful for our partnership with churches in our region & throughout the world with Sovereign Grace.

Along these lines, I have the privilege of visiting Trinity Fellowship Church in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. If you remember, we have prayed for this church for several years. Michael & Kenean Granger were sent from our sister church in Louisville, KY to plant Trinity Fellowship just over 2 years ago. By God’s grace, in the face of Covid and civil war, this church has grown in number and in unity.

In connection with the local church, Trinity Fellowship has helped launch a pastors college modeled after the college both Taylor and I had the privilege of attending. This college aims to equip pastors for ministry in Sovereign Grace Churches. So, I will have the honor of teaching at the Ethiopian Pastors College.

This past year, they graduated their first class. Each of these students will be coming to Addis Ababa for us to study “A Practical Theology of Suffering for Pastors.” I am very excited!

I want to ask for your prayers for:

  • Safe travel - It is an international flight with a few different connections. Pray that I make it there and back with no logistical or safety issues.

  • Health - Leading up to the trip, pray for good health that won’t compromise travel. And, of course, I would appreciate prayer to be healthy while there so I can fully engage the students and friends and serve them well.

  • The power of the Spirit - This is a weighty topic and I need the Lord’s help to communicate powerfully so that these men might personally walk through suffering with steadfast hope and pastor those under their care with compassion and confidence in Christ.

I want to thank you. One of the burdens we have as an eldership is that we would view ourselves as members of the body of Christ throughout the world. I hope this update helps all of us get a small glimpse of what God is doing throughout the world among Sovereign Grace & wonderfully far beyond.

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKIDS

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: David The Psalmist

Scripture: Psalm 23

Bible Truth: There is rest in the presence of the Lord.

Where is Jesus: Psalm 23:6

There is only one way any of us could enjoy God’s mercy and live in heaven with him forever. God sent Jesus, his only Son, to die on the cross for our sin. Now all those who trust in Jesus are forgiven and get to live in the house of God (in heaven) forever. Jesus is the way God kept the promises David sang about. If we trust in Jesus we can live forever in heaven. One day, everyone who goes to heaven will meet David, the man who wrote Psalm 23.

When David sang, “The Lord is my shepherd,” he was exactly right. Hundreds of years later, when Jesus began his ministry, he said, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:14–15).

Pray for Our Global Family: February 2023

We have the joy of partnering with like-minded churches around the world. The following is a brief overview of things to pray for as Sovereign Grace Churches are planted and established in many different countries. The following is the latest prayer update for the month of February:

Hebrews 12.1-2, ‘Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great cloud a witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.'

We are all in a race, the great race, indeed the greatest race of our lives! And so looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, the One we all need so much, here’s how you can be praying for us in the month ahead…

  1. Praise God for the retreat, February 6-8, 2023, that will included our U.S. Regional Leaders, Global Leaders, and a group of future leaders asking God to envision, strengthen, and equip our leaders to serve our churches throughout the world. It was the first time coming together in this way. It was a wonderful time!

  2. Please pray for Billy Raies, Erik Schmaltz, Philip Estrada and Allen Dicharry as they head to Nepal, Feb 21 - Mar 1, to serve our dear friend Barnabas, our Key Leader in Nepal. Please pray for a growing partnership of faith as they serve Barnabas and his Pastoral Team, and for much wisdom as we continue to map out the best way of partnership in this dear country.

  3. Please pray for the 11 young people who just this month started their Young Leaders Internships in SG Australia... Abella Lick (SG Parramatta), Georgia Lick (SG Parramatta), Luke Counsell (SG Wahroonga), Esther Monck (SG Wahroonga), Hollie Roberts (SG Wahroonga), Froilan Samonte (SG Wahroonga), Josh Taylor (SG Wahroonga), Amy Taylor (SG Wahroonga), Marcos Cabral (SG Wahroonga), Hannah Payne (SG Wahroonga), and Sebastian Fasano (SG Wahroonga). That God would really meet with them and bless them throughout the year ahead.

  4. Please pray for Rich Richardson, and the team of 8 SG Pastors, who are coming together in Phoenix, Feb 21-22, to talk about SG Church Development in Latin America (outside of Mexico). Please pray for quick camaraderie in the group, for creative ideas, and one heart.

  5. Please also pray for the growing number of Sovereign Grace church members that are seriously considering cross-cultural mission. Please pray for me (Dave Taylor), the Emerging Nations Team, Mark Prater (Executive Director of Sovereign Grace Churches), and those asking the question. May we together discern the will of God in each of these situations and may His guidance be clear, as we seek to reach the ends of the earth for Jesus.

… Looking then to Him, the founder and perfecter of our faith. May His grace abound to us all!

Thank you for praying with us. May His grace abound! To subscribe to the monthly Sovereign Grace Missions Newsletter, follow the link below.

Bible Story: The Ark of God

Scripture: 2 Samuel 6:1–8

Bible Truth: God is holy.

Where is Jesus: Exodus 25:16–22

David celebrated the return of the ark because it represented the presence of the Lord. In fact, the cover of the ark is called the atonement cover (Exodus 25:17 NIV). This pointed forward to Jesus who died to atone or pay for our sins. Now that Jesus has come, he has made the final atonement for the sins of men. Now there is a new dwelling place for God—in the hearts of men. In a sense, every Christian is a living ark. The presence of God is in us!

Bible Story: David & Goliath

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:1–54

Bible Truth: Salvation belong s to the Lord.

Where is Jesus: 1 Samuel 17:47

Who are you most like in this story: Goliath, Saul and the men of Israel, or David? We all would like to think we are like David, but when trials come to us we can struggle to trust God like the men of Israel did.

The truth is that we are more like the men of Israel than we realize. We all have a giant in our lives—sin. We can’t conquer that giant by ourselves. Like Israel, we need a Savior who will fight and conquer our giant for us. David was the man God sent to save Israel from the enemy, Goliath; and Jesus is the man God sent to save us from our enemy, sin.

David offered to take up Goliath’s challenge to come forward and represent Israel. If he won, Israel would win; if he lost, all of Israel would become servants of the Philistines. Like David, Jesus stood in our place. Now everyone who trusts in him shares in his victory over sin.

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKIDS

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: God Chooses a New King

Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Bible Truth: Man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

Where is Jesus: Isaiah 53:2b

God did not choose David because of his outward appearance but because he had a heart for God. David was a handsome young boy but not tall in stature.

Isaiah tells us of another king who “had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2). God’s choice of David to replace Saul as king over Israel should make us think of another king, King Jesus. Jesus would have a perfect heart for God and die on the cross so that he could extend to us his righteousness.

Through Christ, God takes our heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh. Then God does something truly remarkable, he moves us to obey him by his Spirit (Ezekiel 36:27).

Who Told You? Walt Alexander

Where did the people of Trinity Grace Church come from? We are thousands of miles and thousands of years removed from a cross on a hill called Golgotha. How did God bring a people to belief and establish a local church in Athens, TN?

Each of us can trace our story back to a person or a few people who opened their mouths to tell us the good news.

So who told you?

Who Told Walt?

On Sunday, we heard Walt Alexander’s story of our extraordinary God working through an ordinary person to transfer the message of the gospel. And it brought Walt back to life. The following is a transcript of that story:

I want to tell you the story about a man named David Vickery.

In the South, I fear that we don’t so much believe in Jesus as we are inoculated with knowledge about him. When you give someone an inoculation or a vaccine, you give them a little bit of the disease to help them become immune to it. I fear that we don’t so much believe in Jesus as we know a little bit about him & that little bit keeps us from really believing in him. From really following him. From really living as if he’s all that matters.

But for me, that little bit was not enough.

I was raised in a family of Christians. I was a church kid. I learned all the stories & I knew all the right things to say. I learned a little bit about Jesus, & that little bit was enough to keep the real Jesus far away…until it wasn’t.

After years of drinking & using drugs, I went to the University of Tennessee in the fall of 1999 to continue the party. And party I did.

One particular night, the party pushed early into the morning. I had to get home. So I drove. Along the way, I made an illegal turn & was pulled over. Within minutes, I was handcuffed by the police. I was charged with a DUI & possession of drug paraphernalia, because the marijuana I had been smoking as I made the turn was my last bud. I was angry.

I was taken to jail. Like everyone who entered the holding cell that night, I believed I was innocent. I was sober. It was injustice! After a night in jail, two friends bailed me out.

Throughout that day, the sinfulness of my lifestyle began to settle on me. Desperate, I opened my bible. Point & shoot, not the best Bible reading method! Psalm 34:15-16: The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

I knew who I was. I was the wicked man who the Lord was opposing. The little bit of Jesus I had learned was not enough. I read Psalm 34 & wept because I knew who I was. I was the wicked man. I knew what God really thought about me & it wasn’t good. Before God gives good news to us, He gives us very bad news. That very night, I began to understand the bad news. I came to see & understand for the first time my own sin & guilt before God.

Over the next year, God made me miserable. I no longer found joy in partying. I no longer found joy in drinking & smoking marijuana.

In the summer of 2001, I ran into an old friend of my parents named David Vickery. David quickly recognized the state of my soul & began sharing the gospel with me. Within a few weeks, as he shared with me about Christianity, God opened my heart & brought me from death to life.

As I look back & think of David, I am struck by many things. David is 40 years older than me. When I met him, he had just retired from 30 years of teaching school & wanted to give his time away to helping young folks. David would never think of himself as an evangelist or a teacher or anything like that. In fact, David to this day has a hard time thinking of himself as anything but a failure.

Yet, when I ran into David & began talking with him, I saw a Christian with a different kind of joy & peace. I saw someone I wanted to be like.

David is the ordinary person who told me the extraordinarily good news Christ came to save sinners. David is the ordinary person God used to raise me to life.

Who Can You Tell?

God delights to use ordinary people in the everyday moments. What neighbors, coworkers, or friends has God connected you to?

An opportunity to connect

We want to help provide contexts to build friendships with those who are unchurched or are unbelievers. One way we can do this together is through our upcoming Family Movie Night!

We’ve rented out the Movie Palace to enjoy a showing of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Not only will this be a fun and family-friendly evening together, but it is also an ideal event to invite your unchurched or unbelieving friends to. The movie night provides a casual context to enjoy time together and potentially introduce them to other members of our Trinity Grace family. The first 50 guests to enter the theater will receive chocolate bars and a shot at the golden ticket. Sign up your family and friends below!

TGKIDS

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Saul Disobeys the Lord

Scripture: 1 Samuel 13:3–4, 7b–14

Bible Truth: To obey God is better than sacrifice.

Where is Jesus: Luke 22:42

As a king, Saul failed. One day God would anoint another Man to be king who would not fail. Even when it was difficult, Jesus (the greatest king) obeyed God. The difficult task in front of Jesus was to die on the cross (see Acts 13:22–23).

When faced with the cross, Jesus prayed to his Father in heaven saying, “not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Saul placed his own will above God’s; Jesus did not. As a result of Jesus’ obedience, we have salvation through his sacrificial death.

The Growth of Trinity Grace & Taylor's Commendation!

On Sunday, January 1, we announced Taylor Hollingsworth as a candidate for being ordained & installed as an elder at Trinity Grace Church on January 29, 2023.

But, you may be wondering: What is an elder? Why is it important for our church to add elders?

We want to take a moment to give a little context to hopefully help you understand God’s kindness to our church by opening the door to possibly adding another elder.

Biblical Background of Elders

First, one of our core convictions is that churches are to be led by a team of qualified men. According to our Statement of Faith:

Christ has given the offices of elder and deacon to the church. Elders occupy the sole office of governance and are called to teach, oversee, care for, and protect the flock entrusted to them by the Lord. Deacons provide for the various needs of the church through acts of service. God gives these and other people as gifts to serve and equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

Throughout the NT, there are 3 words used for those who are called to shepherd the church in teaching & leading: pastor, elder, and overseer. Each of these 3 words refer to one office or role in the church.

We see this in 1 Peter 5:

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, aswell as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly... 1 Peter 5:1-2

And when the NT talks about the role of elder in the local church, it always uses the plural form. For example:

“And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.” Acts 14:23 (See also Acts 20:17; Titus 1:5; and James 5:14.)

Why Consider TAYLOR?

Since planting Trinity Grace in 2018, we have been seeking to establish a team of qualified men to lead our church.

We are prayerfully putting forward Taylor to be installed as an elder on January 29.

For the few who don’t know Taylor, he's a remarkably outgoing man. He & his wife Elisabeth love to meet new people & get to know them. In fact, most of us in the church have been welcomed by the Hollingsworths into their home for warm food & grace-filled fellowship!

Taylor is also a student of the Word. He has a sincere appetite for the Word & a desire for others to experience the grace that he has experienced. In that respect, he is a gifted teacher & preacher.

Over the past several years, Taylor has served as a pastoral resident. In the first days of Trinity Grace, he served most Sundays in seen & unseen ways to help the church. He began a pastoral residency with the church at the beginning of 2020. He attended the Sovereign Grace Pastors College throughout the school year of 2020-2021 & returned to continue serving as a pastoral resident in a full-time capacity. Finally, over the past year, he has completed numerous assignments & exams for ordination, in conjunction with our region of Sovereign Grace Churches & in fulfillment of our Book of Church Order.

In November 2022, our region heartily commended him as a man fit to be ordained & installed for pastoral ministry.

We couldn’t agree more!

Why Does All This Matter For You?

Why are we writing all of this?

First, you are a member of Trinity Grace Church. If installed as a pastor, Taylor would be one of your pastors.

Second, we want to ask you to pray. We want you to thank God for Taylor & to pray for God’s will to be done in his life & the life of our church.

Third, we want to ask you for feedback. We want to hear of any concerns you have. Over the next 17 days, please share your questions, concerns, and encouragement with Walt or Buddy.

Conclusion

There are a lot of wonderful things in the headlines right now. There are a lot of sobering things in the headlines right now. The news of what’s happening at Trinity Grace Church will not be hitting any headlines. But, even though the steady building of our local church won’t hit any headlines, it has God’s attention. And we want to be faithful!

TGKIDS RECAP

TGKIDS

The heart of TGKids is to help children understand that the Bible is all about Jesus! Below is the story, scripture, and main teaching points from the TGKids lesson, so that you can talk with your kids about what they learned.

Bible Story: Isreal Demands A King

Scripture: 1 Samuel 8-10

Bible Truth: Desiring anything more than God, even if it’s a good thing, is evil.

Where is Jesus: Revelation 19:13–16

Israel requested a king to rule them like the rest of the nations had (1 Samuel 8:5). So, God answered their desires and gave them a man who was large in stature—a great king from the world’s perspective. But God had another kind of king in mind, a king after God’s own heart. God is not interested in the outward appearance but is interested in the heart. David eventually is selected by God, but ultimately, God would send Jesus to be an eternal king. Jesus would perfectly reflect the heart of God by becoming obedient to death, even death on the cross. In Philippians, God the Father promises that he is going to give Jesus the highest place of all and that every knee will bow before him. Why? Because he is the greatest King! It was always God’s desire that his people be ruled, not by an earthly man, but by God as King.

He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Revelation 19:13–16 niv

We are so blessed to have the greatest King of all, Jesus!

2022 Global Missions Update

Trinity Grace Church has the joy of partnering with Sovereign Grace Churches - a family of churches which is bound together theologically for the mission of planting healthy local churches around the world. Dave Taylor - director of global mission and local pastor in Sydney, Australia - recently posted a wonderful video update that captures what has been happening globally in Sovereign Grace. In this video, Dave shares some highlights from the last year of what God is doing in Africa, Mexico, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

May this update refresh you in the truth that our God is a global God and He is at work. We pray this will encourage you as we look forward to the New Year at what God might do through our local church in this slice of the world!
