Proverbs, Parenting, & Matthew McConaughey.

Parenting is one of the hardest callings any man or woman could pursue.

It demands so many sacrifices & so much time.

I haven’t met a single parent who feels adequate; in fact, most of the parents are desperate for God & his grace.

But, as we considered on Sunday, it is incredible to think of all godly parenting can transfer to our kids with God’s help. Confidence (Prov. 14:26). Wisdom (Prov. 1:8). Safe, secure steps (Prov. 22:6). Blessing (Prov. 10:7). Life (Eph. 6:1-3). Legacy (Prov. 17:6). And so much more.

That is why we should endeavor to take up this calling with all that we have.

The rod & matthew mcconaughey

Last Sunday, we learned how Proverbs urges us to use the rod—or physical punishment—in disciplining our children (Prov. 22:15; 29:15; 23:13-14; among others).

The rod, according to author Tedd Tripp, is “a parent, in faith toward God & faithfulness toward his or her children, undertaking the responsibility of careful, timely, measured, & controlled use of physical punishment to underscore the importance of obeying God, thus rescuing the child from continuing in his foolishness until death.”

The rod is therefore:

  • Not punishing your child, not making them pay for their disobedience.

  • Not retaliating against your child, not getting even for disobedience or embarrassing you.

  • Not your right to uncontrolled anger.

The rod is a careful act of faith toward God for the purpose of rescuing your child from foolishness & restoring them to obedience to God.

Now . . . the rod is not popular in our culture! Many would say it is old school parenting. Others would say it is abusive.

Many of the reasons the rod is unpopular is because it has been misused in the past. That is why it is so important to review the biblical purpose of the rod & make sure our practice of using the rod aligns with this biblical purpose.

Interesting, well-known actor Matthew McConaughey positively describes his parents use of physical punishment.

We were a physical discipline family. We got the belt. We didn’t get grounded.

We never got injured. You got hurt at the time, you cried, & it was over with.

We were a family where you got it over with [quickly]. . . . Take it & it’s over. We don’t hold grudges. No one is going to speak of it again. And if you got in trouble, those were the nights dad would take us across town to our favorite burger joints and stay up as late as we wanted!

You got in more trouble if you brought something back up to someone in the family. No, no, no. They already got in trouble for that.

I don’t necessarily recommend the belt, but in many ways it is so right.

Discipline your child quickly. Then, move on.

In fact, show them love & take them out for ice cream afterwards! And don’t bring it up again!

TRUSTWORTHY resources ON PARENTING

If parenting is a hard calling & something that demands so much of us, we should think carefully about it.

Below are a number of books on the task of parenting I recommend & why:

Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp.

Very good overall book on the goal & purpose of parenting, including detailed instruction on parenting young children & principles for parenting all ages. If you have not read this book & you are a parent, I would strongly recommend it.

Instructing a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp.

After establishing patterns of discipline in the early years, this book helps you learn how to instruct your child & teach them the truths of God.

The Young Peacemaker by Corlette Sande.

Ever had trouble resolving sibling squabbles? Me too! This book lays out truly timeless principles for resolving conflict.

Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens by Paul Tripp.

This look is simply the best at explaining how the teenage years can be, by the grace of God, not the worst years but the best years of parenting.

Gathering to Worship at the Athens Movie Palace this Sunday, November 15.

TRINITY GRACE….AT THE MOVIE PALACE!

So, we are meeting this Sunday, November 15 at the Athens Movie Palace.

SAME TIME, DIFFERENT LOCATION.

During this pandemic, certain businesses have thrived & others have faced many challenges. Movie theaters have struggled.

Community Group Men's & Women's Meetings: November 11 & 18.

image.jpg

No one wins a (real) race without intense training. So too, no one grows as a Christian & gains the prize in the end without training & discipline.

But how do we hold on to the grace of God and discipline & train ourselves for godliness?

For our Men’s & Women’s Community Groups this month, we are reading chapter 5 of The Discipline of Grace to learn how to do just that.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE MEETING THIS WEEK & NEXT WEEK

Read chapter 5 & take time to look over the questions below.

1. What is an oxymoron? What are some common oxymorons we hear often? Jumbo shrimp, big baby, act natural, passive aggressive, friendly fire, etc.

2. Mr. Bridges claims that the chapter’s title—”Disciplined by Grace”—is an oxymoron as well.

  • (a) Before reading this chapter, how would you define “discipline” & “grace”? How do you use these words in your daily life? Provide an example.

  • (b) In your understanding, do “discipline” & “grace” relate to one another? If so, how?

3. Read Titus 2:11-14 together.

  • (a) Where are “grace” & “discipline” or “training” in these verses? How do they relate to one another here?

  • (b) Sometimes we think of discipline as just the things we “gotta do” as Christians (e.g., prayer, Bible reading, witness, etc), but this passage teaches us that grace disciplines us! How should this change the way we respond to discipline in the Christian life?

4. Can you relate to the student Mr. Bridges referenced who said he was careful to do his quiet time each day “so nothing bad will happen to me”?

  • (a) Do you sense God’s smile when you read or pray or obey?

  • (b) What is wrong with that type of thinking—of doing your quiet time in order to avoid something bad happening?

  • (c) How can we cultivate a proper foundation & motivation for spiritual growth?

5. Grace disciplines us to put off ungodliness—say No!—& to put on godliness—say Yes!

  • (a) Mr. Bridges says putting off & putting on are like two sides of a pair of scissors. Without one side, the other side is worthless.

  • (b) How does he encourage us to put into practice putting-off & putting-on in relation to money & speech?

  • (c) Is there an area in your life where you have failed to cultivate both sides of this practice?

Sticks & Stones & Words.

“Stick and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me,” is a common saying you may have heard as a child. The intent may be good, but it’s not usually true.

Words can bless, and they can curse.

WHAT DO OUR WORDS SAY ABOUT US?

We can tell a lot about what’s in our heart from our words. And not many of us want to be judged by the careless words we have spoken over the years.

With our words we’ve been backstabbers, gossipers, and even blasphemers. The power of life and death is in the tongue –Proverbs 18:21

But there is hope.

GREAT POWER

Praise the Lord that his power to save, forgive, and transform is far greater than the power of our tongue.

Yet, the Lord wants to use our words, and their power, to give life to all who hear. As Pastor Walt reminded us yesterday, “gentle words don’t just mend fences, they build houses.”

SCRIPTURES REFERENCED

Below is list of all the scriptures and quotes Pastor Walt referenced in his sermon. (Also, if you weren’t able to catch the sermon, you can watch the full service from the link in the above image.)

Main point: Let the words of your mouth give life to those who hear.

1. The power of words.

  • Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Proverbs 29:20

  • The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body. Proverbs 18:8

  • The north wind brings forth rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry looks. Proverbs 25:23

  • A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin. Proverbs 26:28

  • A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. Proverbs 29:5

2. The weakness of words.

  • By mere words a servant is not disciplined, for though he understands, he will not respond. Proverbs 29:19

  • A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool. Proverbs 17:10

  • In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23

  • Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel are fervent lips with an evil heart. Proverbs 26:23

  • Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling. A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin. Proverbs 26:27-28

  • A fool’s lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating. Proverbs 18:6

  • From the fruit of his mouth a man eats what is good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Proverbs 13:2-3 (18:7, 10:14)

  • “You are not a Christian unless you have been made speechless! How do you know whether you are a Christian or not? It is that you ‘stop talking.’ . . . You do not begin to be a Christian until your mouth is shut, is stopped, and are speechless and have nothing to say.” Martyn Lloyd-Jones

3. The potential of words.

  • A man’s spirit will endure sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? Proverbs 18:14

  • There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18

  • “The Christian needs another Christian who speaks God’s Word to him. . . . The Christ in his own heart is weaker than the Christ in the word of his brother; his own heart is uncertain, his brother’s is sure.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  • Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. Proverbs 12:25

  • “To you also, Jesus says, ‘I know your works.’ You see no beauty in any action that you do. All seems imperfect, blemished and defiled. You are often sick at heart of your own shortcomings. You often feel that your whole life is one great arrear, and that every day is either a blank or a blot. But know now, that Jesus can see some beauty in everything that you do from a conscientious desire to please Him. His eye can discern excellence in the least thing which is a fruit of His own Spirit. He can pick out the grains of gold from amid the dross of your performances, and sift the wheat from amid the chaff in all your doings. Your tears are all put into His bottle. Your endeavors to do good to others, however feeble, are written in His book of remembrance. The least cup of cold water given in His name shall not lose its reward. He does not forget your work and labor of love, however little the world may regard it.” J.C. Ryle

  • To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is! Proverbs 15:23

  • Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

  • A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

  • Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:21

  • A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. Proverbs 15:4

We are two years old!

AnnivPicnic copy.png

This past Sunday we celebrated two big things: Reformation Sunday & Anniversary Sunday.

Reformation Sunday is the anniversary of when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church doors in Germany to begin the Protestant Reformation. And, Anniversary Sunday is the two year anniversary of our small local church, Trinity Grace.

The first event, touched the world. The second, didn’t!

Nevertheless, we love the local church God is building & pray it is a small part of helping many in our community know the freedom of God’s grace for years to come!

Watch this video snapshot of some of the joys of our Year Two.

ANNIVERSARY PICNIC

That evening, we had a wonderful time catching up & celebrating at the Anniversary Picnic at Athens Market Pavilion!

Some highlights: Paul’s hidden rapper talent. Vanessa’s food service wizardry. Dana, Lauren, & many other putting it all on the line for the egg toss. The Hollingsworths! And, despite our best efforts, the Pritchett’s defending their title in an epic ballon-stomping finish!

If you weren’t able to make it, here are a few images from the picnic celebration.

Here's How to Pray for Next Week's Election Today, October 28.

Prayer Break slide.png

It has been a privilege for us to carve out time to pray for our country this month, particularly as the election occurs next Tuesday.

PRAYER BREAK

I encourage you to seize some time on this last Wednesday to pray.

Take specific time to pray at any point of the day. In the morning, before the day has begun. Throughout the day, in little bursts of prayer in the midst of the days activities. In the evening, at the end the of the day.

If possible, break your day in the middle to fast & pray during lunch. We all take time to eat. However long you normally take, devote that time to prayer.

PRAY FOR NEXT WEEK’S ELECTION TODAY

There has not been an Election Day more anticipated & more contentious than this year’s in my lifetime.

Millions & millions of Americans have already voted, more early voting than in any other election in American history. Perhaps the high numbers of early voting are due to individuals trying to vote safely in a pandemic; however, it seems more likely that these early voting numbers reveal the divide in our country—individuals have decided where they stand on this election long ago & it’s on opposite sides.

For obvious reasons, we want to approach this Election Day in a spirit of humility & prayer.

Pray for God’s will to be done.

  • Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. -Matthew 6:10

  • [The Most High] does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” -Daniel 4:35

  • Father, we rejoice that nothing that happens next Tuesday can happen apart from the counsel of your sovereign will (Eph. 1:11). It is you who raise up one man & bring down another (Psa. 75:7).

  • Yet, we pray that whatever happens next week would lead to the advance of your revealed will in this country. We pray that it would lead to greater protection of the poor & unborn, a desire dear to your heart. We pray that it would lead to better healthcare for all Americans. We pray it would lead to fiscal responsibility & economic growth, helping all Americans provide for their families. We pray that it would lead to continued protection of our religious liberties, which we hold very dear.

Pray for all Americans to honor & submit to the President/Vice-President who wins.

  • The Bible is very clear about how we should view leaders & elected officials.

  • Honor the emperor. -1 Peter 2:17

  • Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. -Romans 13:1

  • Father, we pray that all Americans would honor & submit in appropriate ways to the President & Vice-President who wins next Tuesday. We pray against divisive attitudes (#notmyPresident) & destructive actions. We cherish the right to protest but condemn destructive protests & pray against them occurring after this election. Protect the people & businesses of our nation. Let order be maintained, for the benefit of all.

  • As Christians, let our honor & submission be marked by diligent prayer for whoever wins.

Pray for all Christians to possess the attitudes & actions of citizens of heaven.

  • Our citizenship is in heaven, & from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. -Phil. 3:20

  • Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds & glorify God on the day of visitation. -1 Peter 2:11–12

  • Father, we pray that more & more we would long for heaven & rejoice even now that our names are written in heaven (Lk. 10:20). We vote here as citizens of America, but we want our attitudes & actions to display that we are citizens of heaven.

  • We pray that our hearts would be guarded by the peace of Christ. Let us not give in to the anxiety & worry of those who do not know God & assume the future is uncertain.

  • We pray that our hands would be busy working to provide for those in our family & share with anyone in need. Let us turn from anything that defiles us or hurts others.

  • We pray that our mouths would be filled with praise to God & witness to those around us. Let us speak more about the unchanging truths of the gospel than the results of this election. Let our speech be seasoned with salt. Surround us with opportunities to share with unbelievers & build up the body of Christ.

  • We pray that our feet would be ready & willing to go into any situation or any place you call us as ambassadors of Christ.

  • We pray that you would come soon. Come, Lord Jesus. Let your kingdom come in full. Let your will be done perfectly here, for the glory of God alone.

May God guide & direction us during this time!

Come Celebrate With Us!

Copy of Heading.jpg

This Sunday, we are celebrating our second birthday as a church!

I know. 2 years old. Whoopdeedo.

Well, we are actually pumped, because we want to seize every opportunity to give thanks to God for gathering us together as a church! So, we are going to celebrate & party on Sunday afternoon!

DETAILS

All the festivities will begin at 4:00pm at Athens Market Pavilion (106 S. Jackson St.).

There will be a huge, blow-up obstacle course, a bounce house, & plenty of green space for ultimate frisbee or football.

Around 5:45pm, we’ll enjoy dinner together—including home-made barbecue by our very own Bo Cagle & Michael Kessler!

Then, after dinner, we’ll have our annual Battle of the Community Groups. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to take out your friends in some somewhat-friendly games. May the best Community Group win—as long as its not the Pritchetts!

SAFETY

There will be plenty of space to socially distance in a way that makes you comfortable.

In addition, dinner will be a bit different this year. Instead of enjoying a potluck where we get to pick & choose, our food will be plated by volunteers & picked up as we go through the line. This will reduce the potential exposure of potluck sharing & help to keep us safe.

FRIENDS

This celebration is not just for us!

Please invite family & friends to come along with you & enjoy the afternoon with us!

Here's How to Pray for Peace & Justice Today, October 21.

Prayer Break slide.png

As we have mentioned the past several weeks, the most important thing we do can for our country right now is PRAY.

PRAYER BREAK

That’s why we are taking each Wednesday in October to pray.

You can take specific time to pray at any point of the day. In the morning, before the day has begun. Throughout the day, in little bursts of prayer in the midst of the days activities. In the evening, at the end the of the day.

If possible, I want to encourage you to break your day in the middle to fast & pray during lunch. We all take time to eat. However long you normally take, devote that time to prayer.

PRAY FOR PEACE & JUSTICE TODAY

“Man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward.” -Job 5:7

We live in a world where things are not right. Sin has marred all creation & has stained every human heart. Sin has divided families, cities & nations. Sin has crept into institutions, structures, & every aspect of society.

It’s not pretty.

Nevertheless, while we wait for God to make all things right, we pray & work for peace & justice in every way possible.

Pray for protection of the unborn.

  • The God who made the world & everything in it, being Lord of heaven & earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life & breath & everything. -Acts 17:24–25

  • Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. -Psalm 127:3

  • Father, you are the Giver of Life. We receive children as a gift from your hand. We pray for protection of the unborn throughout our country. We pray for an end of all abortion & for the overturning of Roe V. Wade.

  • We pray for comfort for every woman who has had an abortion. Help them to find forgiveness & healing through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pray for justice for the poor, orphaned, & oppressed.

  • But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness. -Psalm 9:7-8

  • For [the ruler] is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. -Romans 13:4

  • Father, you see every act of injustice done within our borders, so we cry out to you to bring swift judgment & justice. Protect & provide for the poor & orphaned through the church & the services our country supplies. Set free the oppressed wherever they are—in broken marriages; in broken homes where fathers don’t protect but hurt; in broken relationships where the strong bully & beat down the weak; & sadly more. Help U.S. Marshalls continue to find & set free girls & boys who are being trafficked within our borders.

Pray for peace among people of different races, backgrounds, & political position.

  • Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. -1 Peter 2:17

  • Worthy are you to take the scroll & to open its seals, for you were slain, & by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe & language & people & nation. -Revelation 5:9

  • Father, we long for the day when people of every tribe, language, people, & nation will joyfully worship the triumphant Lamb together. Until then, we pray for peace & an attitude of honoring one another within our country.

  • We pray against & pray for an end of racial prejudice & hatred. We pray against profiling & prejudice of any kind, according to race, background, political position, or whatever. We pray for humility in ourselves & in our fellow Americans, as we seek to honor everyone & do good to everyone.

Pray for our law enforcement officers.

  • Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. -1 Peter 2:13-14

  • Father, we mourn the animosity & hatred of those committed to keeping us safe, our law enforcement. We thank God for them. We defend them. We support them, even as we know they are human & make mistakes. We need them. And we pray for you to protect them. Preserve & keep them.

  • We pray especially for Athens Police Chief Cliff Couch & Sheriff Joe Guy. Thank you for these men. Strengthen them as they serve in a tumultuous time. Give them wisdom & insight into how to lead their force.

Pray for us.

  • You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. -Matthew 5:13-16

  • If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. -Romans 12:18

  • Father, let us be salt & light in this world. Let us live quiet, godly, & peaceful lives. Let us live in light of the life that is to come.

May God draw near to us & have mercy on us during this time!

Testimony from our friend Charlie Stewart.

IMG_0361+2.jpg

It’s hard to find a picture of Charlie Stewart NOT serving!

Charlie is a man of many talents & quick to use his time & talents to serve others...even while managing a demanding job & wonderfully active family.

Why? Because he’s aware he’s been forgiven much! What a gift! We thank God for you, Charlie!

Several weeks ago, Charlie shared his testimony. You can watch it here or read it below.

My name is Charlie Stewart. I’m from Tellico Plains TN. For my testimony, it is 20 years of abundant grace mixed with a host of miracles.

I grew up in church with parents that loved God and the church. When I was around 10-11, my parents divorced. That kind of ended the church going for the most part. When I got to high school, it seemed like a whole new world opened up. I looked at the people having fun and it wasn’t the church goers. I realized that bourbon and green tobacco were the ingredients to a happy life and I indulged. With a brother 3 years older, I got to hang out with all of the “cool people”. He tried to look after me with death threats if I did anything other than drink. Soon he went off to become an Army Ranger and I had a free pass to do whatever I wanted.

At around 16 years old I started playing music. Being 4’10” and 125 lbs, it seemed a better fit than athletics. Music defined who I was and was what I wanted to do with my life. For a few years it was it was my life. The music scene can easliy lead you into very dark places in life. To most of my friends I was on top of the world. But after being exposed to the gospel as a child, I could never be satisfied, no matter how great things seemed to be.

After winning a foosball game and getting to celebrate my 21st birthday party at age 20, I heard a great friend of mine became “born again”. This made no sense. Not being “born again” because I heard my dad tell my cousins that 1200 times, but this person. He was the craziest, fun, partying human being on planet earth. He had no rules, no reserves, no cares, only fun. You see in my world, when a guy met “the” girl and wanted to settle down and get married, that’s when he becomes “born again”. When I moved home and talked with him I knew there was something unearthly going on though. He didn’t fit my stereotype. I knew that he no longer had the void in his heart that I did.

At that time I had opportunities that most 20 year olds would die for but I couldn’t shake the desire to find this antidote when in fact, Christ was seeking me. Right before my 21st birthday I received salvation and have never looked back. I have had many challenges, but always knew the direction for all of life’s answers. A few years later, I met my best friend Mandy and have the best and craziest family on earth. I am thankful for this church. I love our church family. I love the fact that we have like 300 kids! I appreciate the sound teaching, the biblical structure and the wonderful worship. I love you crazy people!

Same time, different location!

Here's How to Pray for Our Country's Today, October 14.

Prayer Break slide.png

As 1 Timothy 2:1-2 taught us several weeks ago, prayer is the most important thing we can for our country right now.

PRAY FOR LEADERSHIP TODAY

All leaders in our country are positioned by God (Rom. 13:1-4) & we are commanded to pray for them:

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, & thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings & all who are in high positions . . . -1 Timothy 2:1-2

Join us in praying for our local & national leaders:

  • Mayor John Gentry

  • Police Chief Cliff Couch & Sheriff Joe Guy

  • Governor Bill Lee

  • President Donald Trump & his cabinet

  • Senators Lamar Alexander & Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee

  • The Congress

  • The Supreme Court

  • And all other local & national civic leaders

Pray for them to fear God.

  • The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom & instruction. -Proverbs 1:7

  • Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, & do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. But the LORD of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, & let him be your dread. -Isaiah 8:12-13

  • Father, let the men & women who lead our country fear you more than they fear public approval or disapproval. Let them be quick to hear & slow to speak. Let them find safety for our country in an abundance of counselors (Prov. 11:14), beginning with your Word.

Pray for them to serve others.

  • “But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, & whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, & to give his life as a ransom for many.” -Mark 10:44-45

  • Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. -Philippians 2:3-4

  • Father, let the men & women who lead our country not look after their own interests. Let them serve the needs of all Americans, not their own. Let them—along with us—follow the example of Jesus Christ.

Pray for them to do justice.

  • Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil & to praise those who do good. -1 Peter 2:13-14

  • First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, & thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings & all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful & quiet life, godly & dignified in every way. -1 Timothy 2:1-2

  • Father, let the men & women who lead our country condemn what is evil & praise what is good. Let every act of Congress, every judgment of the Supreme Court, & every signature of the President promote justice. Let them protect religious liberty for all. Let them defend the defenseless & speak for those who have no voice, especially the unborn.

Pray for them to lead with conviction & courage.

  • Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law. -Proverbs 29:18

  • Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. -Romans 12:11

  • Father, let the men & women who lead our country not lead with bravado or mere charisma. Let them lead with conviction & courage springing from the truth. Let them be filled with zeal & passion to lead us, as we seek to faithfully follow & support them.

May God draw near to us & lead us during this time!

The Way of Humility

Walt Sunday.png

On Sunday, Pastor Walt continued our series in Proverbs and preached from Proverbs 29:23.

There is a stark contrast between pride and humility. Even though pride seems right (who else is going to plead our cause and represent us?), it leads in destruction. On the other hand, humility seems stupid. Yet, the way up is always down.

John Stott encourages us, “At every stage of our Christian development and in every sphere of our Christian discipleship, pride is our greatest enemy and humility our greatest friend.”

CAMPING & PROVERBS

Campout.png

WHAT DO CAMPING & PROVERBS HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?

On Sundays we’ve been studying the book of Proverbs. This book is mostly structured around a father’s conversation with his son. The author is instructing, warning, & modeling wisdom for his son. “My songive me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.” –Proverbs 23:26

This is the vision of the Father/Son Campout next week, October 16-17.

It’s an opportunity for fathers to be with & invest in their boys. It’ll include time for games (bring your game!), bonfire, s’mores, prayer, & much more for you & your boys

DETAILS

Scott Trew & his family have graciously invited us to camp on his land (Thanks Scott!).

All details are below:

  • Cost is $5 per person to cover expenses (just bring this with you to the camp).

  • We will meet at the Trew’s land at 5:30pm on Friday. We will plan to clean up & depart before lunch on Saturday.

  • We will provide hot dog dinner with chips, drinks, & s’mores. Bring your own breakfast, snacks, & water.

  • The farm address is 2779 Highway 163, Delano, TN 37325 (We will have a sign at the entrance).

  • You will need to bring your own tent/camping gear. If you don’t have a tent or are missing gear, you may want to ask around to see if someone has extras.

  • Note: There is no indoor plumbing, but for guys this shouldn’t be a problem!

Here's How to Pray for Revival Today, October 7.

Add a heading.png

As 1 Timothy 2:1-2 taught us last week, prayer is the most important thing we do, as individuals & as a local church.

It follows then, prayer is the most important thing we can do as a church for our country at any time—especially right now.

PRAY FOR REVIVAL TODAY

What is a revival?

Ray Ortlund says: Revival is a season in the life of a church when the normal ministry of the gospel surges forward with extraordinary spiritual power.

Revival is a season when the church is doing what it normally does but is supplied with extraordinary spiritual power & success.

We long for revival in churches throughout our country. We long for revival in our city & our community & our church.

Pray for understanding.

  • If our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. -2 Corinthians 4:3-4

  • Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. -Psalm 119:18

  • Father, open the eyes of our country to see the greatness of God, the wickedness of sin, & the free invitation of the gospel.

Pray for joy.

  • “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” -John 7:37-38

  • You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain & wine abound. -Psalm 4:7

  • Father, help our country to realize forgiveness of sins before a holy God is the greatest gift we could ever receive & the source of all lasting joy. Let all earthly cares & concerns pale in comparison of the great grace & joy we find in the gospel.

Pray for transformation.

  • If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. -Romans 8:11

  • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. -Galatians 5:22-23

  • Father, fill our country with the Spirit & mark us individually with the fruit of the Spirit. Let us walk in the power of the Spirit as children of light. Let us love what you love & hate what you hate. Let us live in a way that shows our allegiance to Jesus.

Pray for gospel-preaching churches to multiply in our community & nation.

  • Then Jesus said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” -Matthew 9:37-38

  • Father, bless the churches in our country. Increase the influence of every gospel-preaching church. Send out people who love the gospel into areas & among people where Christ is not treasured.

May God draw near to us as we cry out to him for ourselves & our country!

Mark Your Calendars for October!

We are entering the last quarter of 2020. Many will be happy to see this year come to an end! Yet, we still have reason to celebrate. Below are the ways we will be serving and celebrating in October.

Add a heading.png

Each Wednesday in October we want to focus our attention on praying for our country during this difficult season.

On that day, consider fasting your lunch, and using that time (30-45 minutes) to pray for our nation. We will have specific prayer targets sent out on future blogs.
